In anticipation of R.E.M.’s fifteenth studio album, Collapse Into Now, the band is asking fans to submit remixes of their song, “It Happened Today.”

Like many bands, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]R.E.M.[/lastfm] is looking for new innovative ways in which to connect with their fans, getting them more involved in the process of the making of their album.

By going to the band’s website, fans can download the 16 raw-source tracks as a Garageband file for Mac or stem audio files for other systems.

Producer Jacknife Lee said in a statement, “I have bounced some tracks together to make it easier to download and use. We ended up with over a hundred tracks with all the percussion, brass, three pianos, celeste, glockenspiels, vibraphone, eight acoustic guitars, two drum kits, bass synths, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, electric guitars, bass and all the voices. Enjoy, and be bold.”

Once the tracks are mixed users can post them to the band’s website for the band and others to listen to and comment on.
