Today marks the official start of the annual Coachella music festival in California, an event that, yet again, boasts  one of the strongest lineups of the summer festival calender.

Yesterday Trends looked at some of the pop acts taking on the festival. Today, attention turns to the rock bands who will be bringing the noise.

Joining Kanye West as headliners are Arcade Fire and Kings of Leon, two of the most high-profile rock bands of the past few years, with the former shooting to mainstream recognition with their GRAMMY Award win for Album of the Year.

With respective scrobble (listening) counts of 86,728,650 and 99,402,813, and top tracks getting around 18,000 listeners a week, it is no wonder they are headlining. However it is further down the lineup where some real gems start to appear.

Fans of the above will surely appreciate indie rockers Cold War Kids taking to the stage, who will likely be playing tracks from their recent album Mine Is Yours. The album has already been scrobbled 612,454 times since January and shouldn’t take too long to take over past albums such as Loyalty to Loyalty which has 2,384,151 scrobbles.

Elsewhere, English experimentalists Foals will bring their impressive 20,848,987 scrobbles to the second day of the festival, having enjoyed wide success with their 2010 album Total Life Forever. Released almost a year ago, the album has been scrobbled 5,409,742 times, with lead single “Spanish Sahara” their most popular track of the last seven days with 6,225 listeners.
