The annual New York Comic-Con blew through town earlier this month, and aside from wandering wander the floor and visiting booths, we scored an exclusive interview with Claudio Sanchez, frontman for [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Coheed and Cambria[/lastfm] and creator of Evil Ink publishing.

Sanchez discussed what is in store for the band, his other current projects, and everything else that surrounds world of The Amory Wars.

Claudio has spent considerable time developing the epic alternate universe pertaining to his story arc: The Amory Wars, (a.k.a. The Bag.On.Line Adventures,) which unfolds a intertwining tale of science-fictional prophetic political uprising. As readers and fans of the band, we follow along with our protagonists: Coheed, Cambria & Claudio Kilgannon as they try to save Heaven’s Fence & the Keywork from the evil Key-mage, Wilhelm Ryan.

Each album released by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Coheed & Cambria[/lastfm] operatically depicts a separate chapter from this storyline, coming together to form some of today’s finest progressive rock.  Furthermore, each album corresponds with a book series published by Claudio’s company, Evil Ink Comics. Now that we have heard & read the tales of The Second Stage Turbine Blade; In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth Three; The grand finale of Good Apollo I’m Burning Star Four; and come full circle with the most recent (prequel) The Year of the Black Rainbow…what is the future of Coheed and Cambria now that the saga is ‘complete’?
Claudio Sanchez: ”Well, the record is written, and we are recording in November. We will be staying within the world of the Amory Wars and go further into the past.  Fans should be excited WHO of the characters we have picked to follow in this prequel saga [but no specific spoilers YET!]) … I will say that it will hint & influence the pre-existing saga, and that it is all related.” Was this all preconceived while conjuring the origin of Coheed and Cambria while writing in Paris?

Claudio Sanchez: “This is all new.  When I created the idea in Paris it was designed to be a trilogy and end with ‘In Keeping Secrets,‘ but when i created it there was no definitive conclusion to the overall saga so thats why I came up with the ‘Good Apollo 1&2‘ stories… but I always knew that I would tell a prequel/origin story to Coheed and Cambria but as far as how I am going to do it & who I’ve chosen, this is all very new.  And now I’m starting to plot out things for the future that will continue it.

nycc coheed 385 Interview With Claudio Sanchez Of Coheed And Cambria During New York Comic Con  What sort of validity have you found in the theories pertaining to the story/philosophy as concocted by the fans on the forum at fansite: Cobalt & Calcium… how accurate have they been in the past?

Claudio Sanchez: ”It’s been a while since I’ve read but back in the day it was interesting to me to see what some of their interpretations were even if they missed the mark… it was fun to see the excitement.  Every once in a while I will peek on there but for the most part there is so much to go through that I don’t want that in any way to affect what I’m doing at the moment. It’s very easy to go “oh yeah, well… they’re kind of missing the mark but…” I go in to see what people think but I try to avoid the theories.”  Most recently, you created a song for the video game, Batman: Arkham City.  Do you have any thoughts on continuing to write thematic music based on other peoples concepts?  Would you do what you did for Batman for someone else?

Claudio Sanchez:  “Oh yeah of course, I’ve done it in the past.  Transformers, Ghost Rider… if more opportunities like that would come along I would jump on it because its a lot of fun.  Certainly this, as opposed to The Amory Wars which has a concept but is very much ME .. my inner psychosis spilled over albums & comic books.  With something like Batman I get to explore the mythology more and draw from that.  I would love to see more of that come my way.” Any specifics in mind you would wish for?

Claudio Sanchez:  ”Green Lantern for one, … but really whatever would come my way.”

session pics 1882 Interview With Claudio Sanchez Of Coheed And Cambria During New York Comic Con  Tell us how you also recently signed up to cover [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]ZZ Top[/lastfm]’s Beer “Drinkers & Hell Raisers” on the recent A Tribute From Friends album.

Claudio Sanchez:  “Management played a big part in getting the band on the tribute record and Coheed’s guitarist, Travis, really took the reigns on that song.  He picked the song, started putting it all together and then when we all got in studio I tweaked the arrangement a little bit … like the whole operatic section at the end of the song, and added little things here and there to kind of make it our own.  In the mean time we did just want it to be a bare bones rock song to play off ZZ Top but we did need to ‘Coheed’ it up a bit.”

Interview With Claudio Sanchez Of Coheed And Cambria During New York Comic ConEvil Ink & NYCC 2011… As far as Evil Ink goes… you have a brand new project on the table called The Key of Z… whats happening there?

Claudio Sanchez: ”It’s a zombie apocalypse tale that takes place in Manhattan.  All of the colonies that exist around New York, Yankee Stadium; Citi Field; Madison Square Garden; …They’ve all been colonized and the factions inside them are now warring for territorial control of Manhattan island.  It’s actually basically a revenge story.” Will there be more books from Evil Ink in the near future?

Claudio Sanchez: “Right now that is a 4 issue mini series, and I’m working on doing an adaptation of the Second Stage Turbine Blade with writer, Peter David.  Sonny and I have been scripting a Kill Audio sequel and also I have my tentative first superhero story thats kind of in the wings.  Just last night my manager, Blaze and I brought up the possibility of doing another Coheed series with the new album.”  Speaking of Kill Audio, what’s the deal with the sexually charged rooster!?

Claudio Sanchez:  ”You mean Chicken Coke Daddy?!  Um… he’s loosely based on a friend I grew up with… he’s not really like Chicken Coke Daddy… it’s obviously an exaggerated version of this guy …umm but you know, he just likes to party!”
