Today–April 16th, 2012– is the 50th birthday of Ian MacKaye, who most of you know as the frontman of Minor Threat and Fugazi, and the founder of Dischord Records.

He’s not only well known for his contributions to DC’s hardcore scene, but his work affected and influenced artists all over the world, and in many musical genres. Had it not been for Ian and everything he’s done, many of the bands and much of the music you’ve heard on HFS over the years would never have existed.

Ian was not only known for his music, but also for staying true to everything he believed. He refused every record label’s offer to make him a rich man, and he was unapologetically open about his “straight edge” lifestyle, inadvertantly coining the term that became a lifestyle choice for so many of his generation.

Happy birthday, Ian.  DC, HFS, and punk fans everywhere owe you a lot of thanks for your music, your ideas,  and for being true to your ideals, especially when they weren’t popular.
