The Flaming Lips Donate Anthem To Oklahoma City Thunder Basketball Team

Who better to rewrite to write a team anthem for the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder than neo-psychedelic indie rock pioneers–Norman, Oklahoma’s the Flaming Lips?

The band took their iconic song “Race For The Prize” from 1999’s The Soft Bulletin album and made it into a song fit for a sports team–with a little Twitter help from their fans who submitted lyrics.

The rejuvenated rock cheer is entitled “Thunder Up: Racing For The Prize” and Flaming Lips member Steven Drozd graciously put the lively “Thunder Up!” track online for fans to check out.

Coyne is following in Jack White and Jay-Z’s footsteps by attempting to break a Guinness Book of World Records record. While White was snubbed by the committee, Jay-Z was honored for playing the most amount of concerts in one day: seven concerts in seven cities.

The Flaming Lips frontman is trying to play eight; he wants to snag friends like Ke$ha and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes for the shows which will be streamed on MTV in conjunction with the O Music Awards.

Coyne talked about his efforts in a press release:

“Like when the Sex Pistols did their one and only American tour, the weird mid-south (Memphis to New Orleans), has something very absurd about it when contrasted with radical visionary musicians. Elvis and Jazz were at one time radical, but are now mainstream tourist attractions. I don’t remember if I was asked or if I volunteered. But, I’ve accepted the job of, not DRIVING, but commandeering the Magical Mystery Merry Prankster bus. I’ve accepted the attempt at breaking the world record of performing 8 shows in 24 hours. And I’ve explained to the music freaks at MTV, VH1 and CMT that I am not a host. But, I always liked the way Jerry Lewis would get all sweaty toward the end of his yearly telethon. To play and sing Flaming Lips songs at 8:00 in the morning. Well, I’m open to new experiences.”
