Linkin Park To Spread Message Of Sustainable Energy Via Streaming Concert

Other than a few outspoken Brits, you don’t hear about musicians frequently taking up global causes.

Linkin Park will be joining an elite group of outspoken individuals on June 19th as part of Rio+Social. This “global conversation” is being organized by the United Nations Foundation, Mashable, 92nd Street Y, Ericsson, Energias de Portugal and LiveAD.

According to a press release, the focus of the gathering is to discuss the convergence of social media, technology and sustainable development.

Linkin Park will join the event from Los Angeles, and top if off with performance that will include songs from their forthcoming album Living Things. Fans can tune in live via a Warner Bros.-programmed YouTube channel called The Warner Sound. The performance is set to begin at 5:30PM Brazil / 4:30PM ET / 1:30PM PT.

“We believe today’s youth are global citizens and are better connected and informed than any previous generation.” said Linkin Park bassist, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, “Rio+Social is an historic opportunity allowing youth to participate in the global discussion about critical issues like sustainability in a way that has not been possible before.”

This is not the first time the Southern California band has involved themselves in social causes. The band famously founded Music For Release, a non-profit organization who set out to provide access to energy for one million families by the end of 2012.

Linkin Park was asked to join the global event by the U.N. Secretary-General after the band’s good will efforts in Haiti following the devastating earthquake in 2010.

Linkin Park’s album Living Things is set for June 26th release via Warner Bros.
