Brittany Howard has the all the confidence she deserves as she and Alabama Shakes bask in the praise of their debut album, Boys and Girls.

“Are we getting better and better? I didn’t mean to put words in your mouth,” she joked, sitting across from WXRT Chicago’s Marty Lennartz and beating away the Lollapalooza heat with a fan. Describing the following they’ve built, both at home in the States and abroad in Europe, Howard was amazed at the dedication of fans who’ve attended their shows. In Syracuse at Paper Mill Island, she recounted the 100 fans belting out her lyrics, so loud that “I couldn’t hear myself.”

“I’m trying to be sincere. That’s all I’m worried about,” Howard emphasized. “The boys who play behind me get better and better. I somehow keep getting worse at guitar,”

Returning from their recent European tour, Brittany Howard talked about how they’ve kept up with jetting around. “Everybody gets days like that, tired and run down; that’s normal. I’m just happy to be in the United States of America,” she emphasized, saying that Americans “like to holler at you.” Spain, she recalled, was sold out, and “everybody knows the words already.”

Moving on after the cancellation of their Saturday performance at Lollapalooza due to the weather evacuation, Alabama Shakes are flying out to Red Rocks in Colorado to perform with Neil Young.

Alabama Shakes’ debut album Boys and Girls is available everywhere.
