No one will ever accuse Jack White of being a slacker. Over the last ten years, White has released eight studio albums (one solo, two with The Raconteurs, two with The Dead Weather, three with The White Stripes), founded a successful record label (Third Man Records), made or appeared in two music documentaries, and tour extensively around the world. He’s done it all and made it look easy.

In a recent interview at San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival, White spoke about what keeps him going at such a fast pace. “I’ve always been really lucky that I don’t wake up and say ‘God I gotta find something for myself to do. I gotta make up something.'” White told LIVE 105, “I’ve never had that busy work mentality. It’s always been about catching up to things I’ve wanted to do for a while.”

White does understand that this constant reinvention and creative exploration is not always compatible with the business side of the Music Industry.

White explained, “It’s not a good business move. It’s starting all over. It’s starting from scratch. You know, The White Stripes were playing like 20,000 seat places. We start a new band and were playing 1,000 seat places and building all the way up. I like that. It’s a new challenge for me.”

In addition to his prolific musically output, White is also a father of two and has to modify his touring and creating around the demands of fatherhood. “Anyone can tell you, kids will take up 110% of your time. That’s mostly where all my free time goes.”

Will his pace ever change. White doesn’t seem to be ready for that – he thinks it is just the way he is wired.

“It’s not the easy way out. It’s the hard way out.” White explained, “That’s inspiring to me.”

White’s solo album Blunderbuss is out now on Third Man Records and he can be caught on tour throughout the U.S. and Europe this summer.
