After officially debuting “Survival” via the London 2012 Olympics, and “Unsustainable” as a gift to The 2nd Law‘s pre-order customers, Muse fans have had more than just a taste of the forthcoming album. But the two teases were intended to be just that; teases. Today, Muse released the album’s first official single. World premiered on Zane Lowe’s BBC1 radio show, “Madness” comes to us via a lyric video.
“I wrote that song having a fight with my girlfriend,” confesses frontman Matt Bellamy in an interview with KROQ Los Angeles’ Stryker. “Nothing particularly over the top but just having one of those moments where she leaves you for the day to think about it. I rarely write songs that catharticly. All I had was a drum machine and a synthesizer so I just put this very minimal thing together.
“I wasn’t quite sure it would work with the band but when we started the album I showed it to Dom and Chris and they loved it. They sort of took it to another level by adding these extra parts at the end and it became a much bigger song.”
“It’s a real surprise song for this album. It’s probably my favorite song that I’ve ever written.”
“Madness” will be available for download via iTunes at 1:00PM PT/3:00 ET.
The 2nd Law, The band’s sixth studio album, is set for release October 2nd and is available for pre-order in 3 forms; 12″ Vinyl, Digital and Deluxe Box Set via Warner Bros. Records.
In an interview with Britain’s Classic Rock magazine, Bellamy said of the album’s sound, “We toured with U2 last year in South America. And there’s definitely a little bit of influence come on to this album, a little bit of Achtung Baby here and there.” According to the band, it’s their most diverse record yet.
