During our exclusive interview with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and emerging Alabama rapper Yelawolf, the dynamic duo discussed what it was like working with Tim Armstrong of legendary punk bands Operation Ivy and Rancid on their new joint project, Psycho White.

“He’s so humble, man. I didn’t even notice him sitting there when I first met him,” Yelawolf recalled. “He was just jamming on the guitar, writing. It was actually Travis’ idea to bring him in for the ska vibe, which Tim is famous for. It was brand new to me, something I would never have imagined doing. I think I did a pretty good job hanging in there with them. It was an honor to have him on our record.”

Travis Barker has a long history with Armstrong, as the two formed band the Transplants with Skinhead Rob back in the late ’90s.

“I was working on the song ‘Push ‘Em’ with Yelawolf, and at the same time I was recording the new Transplants album with Tim,” Barker explained. “When Tim heard ‘Push ‘Em,’ he was like, ‘This is amazing!’ Tim and Rob were both sitting there, so I asked them to do backup vocals on the track. A week later, I was like (to Tim), ‘I’m gonna write a couple more joints for the EP — you wanna do something together?’ Tim and I got together for an hour one day and wrote three songs. We sent two of them to Yela, and he picked the reggae-influenced one (“Six Feet Underground”). That’s how it came about.”

There is no firm release date for the debut Psycho White EP, which is tentatively due to see the light of day around late October or early November. The record will be released independently through Barker’s clothing line, Famous Stars and Straps.
