Social media has become one of the most important tools for the modern musician. Twitter and Facebook allow the touring and up-and-coming artist the ability to connecting with an increasingly mobile fan base. It may be crucial marketing tool but not every artist is pleased with communicating in Tweets.

“I don’t like the forum,” complained Davey Havok of Blaqk Audio and AFI. “I think that communication at that level is really a sign of the times. It’s really a zeitgeist of the lack of depth of communication and interest – culturally speaking – in art.”

Havok also explained to Miles the DJ at Live105 San Francisco that part of his problem with Twitter is he considers it narcissistic.

“As a means of getting quick bits of information – which I think a lot of people use it for as opposed to as a means of strange celebrity some sort of insular or universal celebrity – there is a narcissism to the format that doesn’t appeal to me.”

Havok admitted that realistically he could not ignore social media – even if he has a healthy distaste for it.

“I did it because it is conversely a good means of communication. If you are CNN or if you are a fine artist and you want to get your art out to people.” Havok continued, “I suppose that would be a positive use of Instagram – which I feel has very few positive uses as well. It’s a dark time but I conceded and I am involved in it – embarrassingly so.”
