The Melvins’ Trevor Dunn To Green Day’s Billie Joe: “Nothing Worse Than Some Rock ‘N Roll Brat Throwing A Tantrum”

In the wake of Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s recent onstage outburst in Las Vegas (resulting in the singer checking into rehab), bass player Trevor Dunn of sludge-rock legends the Melvins has lashed out at Armstrong, calling him a “little weasel” in a scathing diary entry on

“There’s nothing worse then [SIC] some rock’n’roll brat throwing a tantrum and going AWOL just because he can’t keep himself occupied,” Dunn wrote. “Yes, I’m referring to that little weasel in Green Day. That guy’s main problem is that he doesn’t realize that he is Justin Bieber. He should take some of the green in his wallet, buy himself a green smoothie and relax. What kind of band name is Green Day anyway? Is that in reference to all the chord progressions they continually recycle?”

In contrast, Armstrong has found moral support from other artists, such as Canadian singer Alanis Morissette, who in addition to covering Green Day’s “Basket Case” in concert, has come out in support of the embattled singer.

“I’ve always been an advocate and supporter of artists and Billie Joe to me — he deserves to be bowed down to,” Morissette said to Billboard. “He’s been in this industry for a long time and so for him to experience the consequence of a system that kind of set it up for him to fail is a travesty to me.”

Former Guns N’ Roses / current Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum has also weighed in on the situation, tweeting that Armstrong’s outburst “was the most punk rock thing he has ever done.” But Sorum went on to add, “Then he had to go and ruin it by apologizing. Corporate Rock is alive and well. Never really bought that band anyway.”

The Melvins have nothing better to do? They have been tirelessly making music since 1983-1984 and still tour relentlessly. They have actually evolved over the years. Their current tour is 51 shows in 51 days…a world record that they will be setting. They’ve inspired countless bands. Green Day is nothing more than kids dressing up like their heros of yesteryear and doing their shitty rendition of great “punk” bands from the late 70s and early 80s. Their rendition is very one-dimensional, inauthentic, and just plain boring. Billie Joe could actually take a lesson from the Melvins and not stay up all night doing blow and boozing it up like all the other crybaby rockstars. Then your radio rock darling might not have embarrassing mental breakdowns and hissy fits that will cut his corporate career short. Actually, this type of bullshit is exactly what his corporate sponsers want. Fuck yourself up, go to rehab, stir up controversy, and live out that rock n roll cliche that all the kids will eat up.
