Scars on Broadway, the rock group started by System of a Down members Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan, ostensibly went on hiatus in late 2008. While the band has performed since then, the line-up has dramatically changed. Dolmayan and rhythm guitarist Franky Perez are no longer in the band, but the group performed with new drummer Jules Pampena at Epicenter 2012 and Malakian told KROQ‘s Rich Rubin that the band is back.

When Rubin asked him why he made that decision now, the singer said that he “just went in, recorded some songs, and felt like bringing the band back.”

“It felt right for me to do this right now,” elaborated Malakian. “We kind of cut it short last time and I think that had a lot of do with me and what I was going through at that time and it just seems right to do the band now. All the wheels feel like they are turning the same direction.”

Malakian continued, saying that in order to be inspired he has to be in the “mood” and just “can’t force” music to come out. He went back to music as a getaway. “If I didn’t have that I’d lose my mind.”

“I have these tunes and there was some rough stuff that was happening in my life and I almost went into the studio as therapy,” the musician confessed. “I was like, ‘I just want to go into the studio for a week or two and just record these songs and see what happens.'”
