How To Be A Hero

Tonight’s HFS Locals Only Spotlight features Baltimore alternative rock band How To Be A Hero, who have just proudly unveiled their take on one of the biggest pop songs of the year.

You may remember that we featured these guys back in May with their song “Just Run Away”…and they were so excited, they posted this giddy video on their Facebook page:

This week, they’ve been suspensefully promoting a “secret cover song” that was to be unveiled today on their ReverbNation profile…and as it turns out, it’s a cover of one of the biggest pop songs of 2013, “I Knew You Were Trouble” by Taylor Swift.

The song starts out very true to the original, with a bit more of a pop-punk feel and bassist Shauna Jansen deftly handling Swift’s vocal role. About a minute in, the chorus kicks in with a whole-band sing-a-log, and the song begins to shed its pop costume and shows its true rock intentions. Halfway through the next verse, Jansen hands most of the vocal duties to vocalist/guitarist Rob Harford and the band steamrolls the rest of the way through the song.

We think it’s pretty clear that even if you were a fan of the original version of this song, How To Be A Hero’s version will make it sound flimsy in comparison.

The band is not only eager for you to hear this track…they also want you to own it and play it loud, so we’ve made it available as a free download in the audio player below.

And if you’ve got a local band you’d like us to feature on the HFS Locals Only Spotlight one of these weeknights at 9 PM, here’s how to get your stuff to us.

On a Windows PC: Right-click the “download” link, then choose “Save Target As” or “Save Link As”.
On a Mac: Hold the “Control” key while you click the “download” link, then choose “Download Linked File”.
