"Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland."

Rolling StoneMTVSPIN and other media sources are reporting that Stone Temple Pilots have issued a one-sentence announcement that frontman Scott Weiland has been officially fired from the band:

“Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland.”

That’s it. A spokeswoman for the band says that the band has no further comment or explanation at this time.

Scott Weiland is days from embarking on a solo tour in which he will play STP’s first two albums, Core and Purple, in their entirety, including a date on March 11th at the Howard Theatre in Washington, D.C. According to Weiland, he wanted to do a 20th anniversary tour for Core last year, but the band wasn’t into the idea, so management suggested he move forward with the tour using his own band, The Wildabouts.

We’ll bring you more on this story as it develops.

UPDATE, 12:06 PM:

This news comes after Slash claiming back in December that Weiland “got fired from STP”, and Weiland’s own denials to Rolling Stone just yesterday that “STP has not broken up. I haven’t quit. I haven’t been fired.”

UPDATE, 5:00 PM:

Now we’re hearing Scott Weiland’s response to the news, in this quote delivered to Rolling Stone through a spokesperson:

I learned of my supposed “termination” from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press.  Not sure how I can be “terminated” from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that’s something for the lawyers to figure out.  In the meantime, I’m looking forward to seeing all of my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday.  – Scott Weiland
