MGMT are beaming their latest single, “Alien Days,” to fans’ headphones, released just in time for Record Store Day, Saturday (April 20).

The track, put out as a cassette, is the first taste of the Connecticut band’s upcoming self-titled third album, due out this year, according to Rolling Stone.

The dreamy (but punchy) track is punctuated with spacey sound effects and sparkling wind chimes, while front man Andrew VanWyngarden sings, “Today we find infinite ways it could be any worse/It’s a blessing and it’s also a curse/Those days have taught me everything I know/How to catch a feeling/And when to let it go.” Listen below.

Like their enormously popular Oracular Spectacular single, 2008’s “Kids” (certified platinum,) “Alien Days” ups the creep factor with samples of children’s voices, this time layered behind VanWyngarden’s lead vocals.

The new song is a fresh take on the psych-influenced band’s sound, but remains distinctly MGMT – think the Doors and Jefferson Airplane if they had access to computers.

“Alien Days” marries the synthrock vibe of debut Oracular Spectacular with 2010’s Congratulations’ more experimental approach, creating solid ground for what’s to come on MGMT.

The band had previously released a teaser video for the “cassingle,” in which they launch a sock puppet into their trippy interpretation of space, where, in true MGMT fashion, things get a little weird.

By the sound of “Alien Days,” it’ll be a while before MGMT comes back down to Earth, metaphorically speaking.

The band is scheduled to hit the road this month on tour through mid-May, with a few additional festival dates scheduled for June and July.
