If you, like me, were at the Fillmore in Silver Spring on Friday, February 22 to see Imagine Dragons and Atlas Genius play a sold-out HFS show, you might remember another band who played first, fronted by a fury-filled woman who was extremely grateful for the great crowd who came that night.

That woman was Aja Volkman, and her band is named Nico Vega (named for the mother of their original drummer). Her voice has been compared to that of Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Joan Jett, and Janis Joplin. The band is riding the success of their new EP, Fury Oh Fury, with a new album on the way in a few weeks, and the song I’m introducing you to, aptly entitled “Beast”, was introduced last fall in the trailers for the video game BioShock Infinite and the Tom Cruise movie Jack Reacher.

Sure, Volkman was proud to see how well-received her band was that night…but she also loved how excited they were to see the evening’s headliner, since her husband just happens to be Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds.

Check out “Beast” and let me know how it strikes you. Is the song as impressive as her pipes? Want to hear it more? We want to know.
