System of a Down fans hungry for some new music from the band will be getting something to sonically snack on courtesy of artist extraordinaire Serj Tankian.

The System of a Down frontman will release two albums this summer on his label Serjical Strike Records. Both albums sound very different from classic System of a Down fare, although the band is musically renowned for meshing dichotomous styles.

Orca, a symphonic work based on modern classical composers in four acts, was recorded in Tankian’s Austrian home studio thanks to money raised on Kickstarter. Musical comparisons in the press release include Ennio Morricone and Philip Glass.

Tankian says that  “Orca is known as the killer whale, but is really a dark dolphin, a symbolism for human dichotomy.”

Jazz-iz Christ shows another side of Tankian’s skilled mastery of different musical types and is a 15-track progressive electro-jazz compilation that infuses rock and roll and ethnic influences.

Orca and Jazz-iz Christ will both be available in June and July via iTunes, Amazon, and Tankian’s Serjical Strike Records website.

Although System of a Down will tour Europe this summer, they will only play a single U.S. show at the Hollywood Bowl on July 29th. Despite voicing interest in recording new music as a band, System has no concrete plans for new music this year.
