Throwback Thursday With Tripping Daisy

One person’s one hit wonder is another person’s favorite band. Such is the case with me and Tripping Daisy. You probably know them as that band that sang “I Got A Girl.” But I was hooked from the first time I heard them on HFS in the 99.1 days with the song, “My Umbrella.” (If you get a chance, find their first indie album “Bill” and give it a listen. Simply amazing.)

Tripping Daisy weren’t around long. They formed in Dallas in 1991 and broke up for good in 1999. They never were able to recreate the success they had with the 1995 album, “I Am An Elastic Firecracker.” The song “I Got a Girl” took off and eventually reached #6 on the Modern Rock Charts. They even played the 1995 HFStival.

They played a show at the 9:30 Club the same night as the 1996 HFStival. Even though Tripping Daisy wasn’t on the bill, they were there and told the crowd at the beginning of the show that because everyone in the audience was surely worn out from being at the Festival all day, they would do a “Campfire set” and basically did a stripped down, low energy show. Color me ticked because I had friends who had gotten married that day and then dragged a friend to the show that night telling him how awesome and high energy they were. I think we were the only 2 in the club that hadn’t been at the Festival and we left way disappointed.

Anyway, the band decided to disband after the death of their guitarist Wes Berggren in 1999. However, their spirit lives on in a band that contains many of the Tripping Daisy members (including singer Tim DeLaughter), The Polyphonic Spree.

While I like Polyphonic Spree, I really miss Tripping Daisy. “Bill” is my go to album when I need a pick me up.

So, from the 1992 album “Bill”, here is “My Umbrella.”
