This week’s Wayback Wednesday is sure to make some of you feel old. On this day in 1991, REM released what would become their biggest selling album, ‘Out of Time.’ For those of you that are mathematically challenged, that was 23 years ago. 23 YEARS! Many look at ‘Out of Time’ as the album that broke REM internationally and it even won the Grammy that year for Best Alternative Album.

When choosing my song to look back at, I usually like to go a bit off the beaten path, with a favorite of mine that may not have been the most popular song. I had considered Shiny Happy People which, while a hit, wasn’t the biggest one off of Out of Time. But I just can’t overlook what turned out to be their biggest song, the Grammy winning “Losing My Religion.” The song itself was notable as REM’s highest charting US single, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on both the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts. But it was the video that really caused people to take notice. Strong religious overtones combined with Michael Stipe’s spastic dancing won not only critical acclaim but 6 MTV Video Music Awards including Video of the Year. Stipe made quite a spectacle of himself at the awards ceremony, peeling off t shirt after t shirt with different slogans everytime they won a Moonman.
Funny enough, this song always makes me think of the WHFS 23rd Birthday Bash at Hammerjacks in 1991. I was lucky enough to snag a ticket and was beyond excited to see Jelly Fish. (Hmmmm. Watch this space for a Wayback Wednesday on them soon!!) Not only were they amazing but one of the guys in the band (I think it was Roger Manning Jr.) did a spot on impression of Stipe and his dancing. So funny!

Time for you to check out this game changing video for yourselves.

From 1991’s Out of Time, this is ‘Losing My Religion.’
