Rock Flashback: Suzi Quatro

Although Suzi Quatro was from Detroit, she was never as big a star in the States as she was in the UK, where for a stretch of the 1970s, her records were guaranteed hits. Her American career didn’t really take off until she was cast on one of the most popular shows on TV.

Quatro started hitting in Britain during the glam-rock era. “Can the Can” hit #1 in the UK in 1973; “Devil Gate Drive” would ascend the summit the next year. “Can the Can” was a minor hit in the States (although not until 1976), but “Devil Gate Drive” was both too retro and too rockin’ to cross over to the American charts of 1974. Quatro’s other hits, such as “Daytona Demon” and “48 Crash,” were what their titles implied — straight-up no-frills rock ‘n’ roll, made alluring by Quatro’s bad-girl looks.

In 1977, Quatro was cast as rock singer Leather Tuscadero on the TV series Happy Days. She appeared in only seven episodes, but the exposure gave her career a boost.

She scored her first big American hit in 1979, but “Stumblin’ In,” a duet with Chris Norman of the group Smokie, was a tepid pop song that did not remotely hint at the fireball Quatro had once been in the UK. None of the four singles that followed was able to break into the American top 40, however; the last one appeared in 1981.

Recently, Suzi Quatro has been hosting a classic rock show on BBC Radio, and she still performs in Europe. Last fall, she released an album of new material called In the Spotlight.

Last.fm Trends: The Cranberries Look To Tomorrow

Irish rockers The Cranberries are set to return after a break of eleven years with the release of new album Roses.

The purveyors of ’90 hits such as “Zombie” and “Dreams” haven’t been seen as The Cranberries since 2001′s album Wake Up And Smell The Coffee.

Last.fm Trends looks at their scrobbles in anticipation of what is in store.

The band’s extended break certainly hasn’t deterred listeners. A total scrobble count just shy of 40,000,000 from 1,647,092 listeners show they are still as relevant as ever, with aforementioned 1994 hit “Zombie” listened to by 10,006 listeners last week.

The popularity of the track, which comes from the album No Need To Argue (incidentally their most popular album with 6,829,983 scrobbles), is such that their second most listened to track last week, “Linger”, had 5,102 listeners.

Roxy Music Set To Release 12-Disc Career-Spanning Box Set

Photos: Bryan FerryRoxy Music plans on celebrating their 40th anniversary in a big way. Virgin Records is set to release a career spanning box set, Roxy Music: The Complete Studio Recordings 1972-1982, on April 2. The collection will include eight CDs and four DVDs with “high-resolution audio.”

The albums set to be re-released are: Roxy Music, 1972; For Your Pleasure and Stranded, 1973; Country Life, 1974; Siren, 1975; Manifesto, 1979; Flesh and Blood, 1980; and Avalon, 1982. Bonus material, non-album singles, B-sides, and remixes will also be included in this mega set.

One-Hit Wonders: Big Country And “In A Big Country”

Though they had a string of hits in the UK over the course of more than 15 years, Big Country found only one hit in the US…and we all know which one that is.

“In a Big Country” was the third single by Big Country released by Mercury Records in the US. Taken from their debut album, The Crossing, the song was the collaboration of band members Stuart Adamson, Mark Brzezicki, Tony Butler and Bruce Watson and produced by U2 knob-turner Steve Lillywhite.

Released in May 1983, the song made a slow, steady 6-month climb up the charts, peaking at #17 on the pop chart in December (and #3 on the rock charts).

Unlike many One-Hit Wonders who like to believe otherwise, frontman Stuart Adamson is quite alright fitting into that category. “If we’re known for nothing more than just that one song,” he told VH-1, “I’d be pretty happy with that.”
